Reflections and Inspirations from Baba's Garden - featuring the fused glass mosaic artwork of Winnipeg artist Patricia Tymkiw.

Memories from childhood follow us all of our days. The flowers, the raindrops, the leaves, the butterflies, and the birds all sing to us creating some of the most poignant and luminous of images.

Artist Patricia Tymkiw spent the sweetest of times in her Baba's garden - a sanctuary that also produced food that both sustained her family and decorated her world with the changing of seasons. Now, Patricia invites us into her garden of fused glass reflecting light and colour - as does a raindrop on a rose petal.

New Exhibit - Winter Wear
Opening October 14, 2017
Braving the Cold: Winter Wear of Ukrainian Pioneers
With a collection of artifacts and photos from the Collection.

Western Canadian winters can be harsh and unforgiving. Courage, perseverance and strength were qualities that Ukrainian pioneers brought to Canada upon immigrating at the turn of the twentieth century. Ukrainian pioneers survived through all manner of adversity and through the worst the elements could deliver.

Snow and wind blowing across the steppes and woodlands of Ukraine prepared these people for what awaited them. Sheepskin, fur, leather and wool felt were some of the most common outer garment materials. Traditional clothing design, construction and materials adapted them to long Canadian winters.

Shown is 'The Lines of Harvest'. Shows until January 30, 2016. Admission.

New Constitution for the Museum
The Government of Canada passed a new Non Profit Corporations Act which comes into force October of 2014. All existing federally incorporated non profit corporations, which includes the Museum, are required to reapply for registration or they will be deemed to have dissolved. The application involves a Special Resolution of the members (passed by a two-thirds majority) with Articles of Continuance and Bylaws attached. This will essentially be the new Constitution for the Museum and will govern our operations going forward.

For those who have misplaced their copy of the current 1995 Constitution and Bylaws over these past 18 years, or have never before had the opportunity to review it, a link can be found on the "About Us" section of this website.

New display: Treasures from the Collection
New in the temporary gallery! ...What is a treasure? How do you know when you find one? The dictionary definition of ?treasure? says that it is something of great worth or value. It can be money, jewels, precious metals, textiles or artwork. But, does it necessarily have to have a noticeable monetary value? Perhaps having a special place in one?s heart is enough? For instance, a doll a little girl took on a journey on a ship across the ocean or a simple sketch a renowned artist made to depict his childhood memories. Treasures are around us, we just need to learn how to see them.

Christmas wishes!
З Різдвом Христовим!
The Board of Directors and Employees of the Ukrainian Museum of Canada extend wishes for the very best of the holiday season. May the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ bring peace and joy now, and throughout the New Year!

З Новим роком і Різдвом!
Христос ся рождає!
Хай Музей наш і всіх нас
Він благословляє!

Христос надродився!

Traditions of Sviat Vechir (Holy Evening)
Christmas is a very special celebration for Ukrainians and Ukrainian Canadians. Many traditions and rituals are observed, with religion, food and family being the central part, with each aspect having special meaning.

Family gathers for this festive meal which is prepared fresh on that day. Everyone wears their best clothes; there can be no bickering! Children anxiously await the arrival of the first star which commemorates the Star of Bethlehem.

The table is set with a plain cloth for the visiting spirits of the dead and a richly embroidered one is placed on top. Straw is placed between the tablecloths and on the floor beneath the table to represent the manger. Sometimes candy and coins are hidden in the straw for the children to find after the meal. Gifts are not a significant part of the evening because they would have been received weeks earlier on the Feastday of St. Nicholas.

75th Anniversary Celebrations - September 23
At first sight, Friday, September 23, 2011, was just another calm beautiful autumn evening on Spadina Crescent in Saskatoon - lush yellowing trees, swift flowing river and blue living skies. Yet, this evening stood out remarkably as the Ukrainian Museum of Canada celebrated a milestone 75th anniversary.

Approximately 150 friends, including clergy, dignitaries, Museum members and volunteers joined to congratulate and celebrate the present; and, with spirits of our ancestors filling the air, the foresight of original founders and diligent work of the past 75 years was recognized.

We will be featuring a temporary display case at the entrance to the main gallery which will change often throughout the year.

This month the display features items remembering those who have sacrificed their lives for freedom. Artifacts include an army registration card from 1918, medals and military clothing.

Remembering those who have defended freedom
We will be closed on Friday, November 11 in honour of Remembrance Day. Take a moment to remember all who have sacrificed their lives in military service.

Leonard Krawchuk's exquisite collection returns!
Leonard Krawchuk has been collecting photographs, books, jewelry, ceramics, metal work, paintings, textiles, weavings, leatherwear, woodwork, and festive clothing of Ukrainian origin for over forty years.

His love, knowledge and passion for the historical value that each item holds are testament to the spirit of generations of his ancestors and to the very depth of his soul.

These are not just "antiques" or "costumes". These artifacts each have a heart and a soul and this we must never forget.

Christmas at the Museum 4
The Carolers

Caroling is a very important tradition in Ukraine. It is usually done between Christmas and New Years. Kolidaky are sung for Christmas and Shchedrivky are sung around New Years. The lead caroler carries a star, which is elaborately decorated for the occasion. If you listen closely, you may be able to hear a choir singing right now.

Christmas at the Museum 3
Traditionally, ordinary objects are transformed during the Christmas season.

Much thought and work highlight how Ukrainian Canadians transform old into new as each generation celebrates the season by making the traditions their own.

Christmas at the Museum 2
Religion, food and family are a central part of Ukrainian Christmas traditions. Here is a brief overview of a few of our traditions.

The didukh (see picture) is the Ukrainian name for the wheat sheaf in the corner of the house. It is the home for the spirits of the ancestors for the season and is made of the very best wheat of the harvest.

It is also known as Grandfather.

Christmas at the Museum

Christmas is a very special celebration for Ukrainians and Ukrainian Canadians. Many traditions and rituals are observed, and each aspect of Christmas has a special meaning. Everyone is wearing their best clothes and the house has been cleaned top to bottom for the day, although all spider webs are left untouched. Legends about the generosity of spiders at Christmas mean they are not to be disturbed.

Yarmarok Fashion Show
Come see the Ukrainian Museum of Canada mix the traditional with the contemporary as we showcase Ukrainian fashions during Yarmarok 2010.

Fashion, what we wear and how we wear it, can convey a wealth of information about the gender, age, social status, personal situation and even the personality of a person. Clothes can tell us a lot about a country's history, customs and traditions, as well as its social and economic life. Traditional outfits of a country can take one closer to her cultural roots, and remind us of the glorious past of our ancestors.

There will be a Fashion Show Friday, November 26th during Yarmarok 2010. The show will start at 7:30pm.

Tickets for the Fashion show are $25.00 and can be purchased at the Ukrainian Museum of Canada or by phoning 244-3800. A limited number of tickets are available; please purchase early.

Yarmarok 2010

Summer Conversation
Recently I had an interesting conversation with one of our visitors as I was covering the Gift Shop. She and her family were visiting from Montreal. She grew up in Notre-Dame-de-Grace (NDG) which is one of that city's more diverse neighbourhoods.

She is of Polish and Ukrainian descent and was curious about the differences between the two cultures. We got into an interesting discussion about Ukrainian customs and superstitions, as well as what being a second generation ethnic Canadian was like.

Uncover Ancient Mysteries
A recent addition to both the Gift Shop and Library is the book Mysteries of Ancient Ukraine written by Krzysztof Ciuk.

It is a full colour English book detailing Trypillian culture from 5400 - 2700 BC. Inside are gorgeous photos, interesting essays and many maps. It is a lovely coffee table book that would look amazing sitting on your table while providing insightful and useful information about the Trypillian culture.

The book is published by the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) and has forewords by the President and First Lady of Ukraine.

From Dust to Dust : Temporary Exhibit
Appearing now in our Feature Gallery is the pottery of Saskatchewan potter Peter Rupchan.

This Ukrainian immigrant had six homesteads and traveled throughout Saskatchewan selling his pots to local farmers and whistles to their children.

Come in and enjoy these practical-though somewhat fragile-items, peruse the maps, read interesting facts about Peter's life and work and enjoy the documentary.
