Along with the bitter cold, came the celebration of some of the most beloved of Ukrainian Canadian rituals that joyously brought the community together. Festivities during long and dark winter days brought happiness, warmth and new beginnings to these people in their new land as they prepared for the Christmas season. Caroling and storytelling remains to this day a favourite winter pastime as Ukrainian Canadians welcome family and friends into their homes

This exhibition presents traditional styles of winter wear, embroidered and woven clothing and headdress. This clothing was vital to Ukrainians adapting to and thriving in their new homeland. Contemporary fashions, modern design and fabrication influenced Ukrainian people as they embraced and settled into life in Canada. They were not unlike others in the early 20th century when traditional designs and a distinct cultural life eventually gave way to contemporary clothing and various lifestyle changes.

Function and timeless beauty is found in these treasures gleaned from the collection of the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, Saskatoon. These precious artifacts are accompanied by archival photographs which capture the essence and poignancy of another place in time when Ukrainian Canadians braved their first days in a new land.

This exhibition is made possible with financial assistance from Daughters of Ukraine, Ukrainian Women's Association of Canada, Regina, Saskatchewan
